Barry McKay QC

I was proud to be appointed Solicitor-General because it gave me the opportunity to continue my career in public service and to help develop my team of lawyers in providing a high quality of legal services to Government mindful of the need to protect the public interest and to safeguard and preserve the Constitution of Bermuda and the fundamental rights and freedoms which it enshrines.  I also pledged to uphold the traditions and high standards of equity, fairness and justice which my post demanded. I joined the United Kingdom Civil Service in 1966 after an open competition and served for the next 31 years in Her Majesty’s Customs and Exercise.  I was admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 1985.  In 1997, after a UK Government Legal Service open competition, I was appointed an Assistant Treasury Solicitor.  For the next 7 years I was a Director of two civil litigation groups providing a wide range of legal services to all UK Government Departments and Agencies.  During my time at the Treasury Solicitor’s Department I took a primary role in several public inquiries including Lord Phillips (BSE Mad Cow Disease) and Lord Hutton (Death of Dr. Kelly) Inquiries. Also, during this time I was elected Vice President of the First Division Association of Civil Servants and in 2002 after many years of mentoring and sponsoring legal undergraduates and trainees I was appointed Honorary Fellow of Brunel University. After an open competition in early 2005 I became a Senior Lawyer to the United Nations Mission in Kosovo where I served for the next 3½ years providing legal advice to the Provisional Government and United Nations Institutions in Kosovo.
